About Stone Lumber
Frank’s son Bert and his wife Marie took over the family business in 1933, and formed an Idaho corporation in 1939. Bert and Marie were also very involved in the community. Bert was a charter member of the Nampa Rotary Club, President of the Nampa Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of the Nampa School Board.
In July of 1948 the Schlerf family moved to Nampa and Don Schlerf went to work for the Stone family. Don had experience setting up new stores in Idaho, Oregon, and Utah that carried hardware, paint, and building materials. He was instrumental in organizing what would become a “One Stop Shop” with an expanded selection of building materials, hardware, and paint. This was in a new store built in the 1940’s at 15 9th Avenue South. Don and his wife Zola purchased the business from the Stone Family in 1968 and worked together until Don’s health forced him to retire in 1978.
July 1, 1980 Don and Zola sold the family business to their son and son-in-law and their wives Monte and Melissa Schlerf, and Roger and Karen Kotter. Roger and Monte worked together and managed the business several years prior to purchasing it. Over the years they served on various industry councils and became involved in community organizations. Roger and Monte were past presidents of the Nampa Exchange Club and Nampa Lions Club respectively. They have worked with and supported many other organizations over the years including Advocates Against Family Violence, Boy Scouts of America, Boys and Girls Club, Nampa Chamber of Commerce, Nampa Schools Foundation and many local schools, Nampa Shelter Foundation, Nampa Ministerial Association, Salvation Army, and more.
July 18, 1994 was a day many Nampa residents still remember when a seven alarm fire destroyed Stone Lumber and several other surrounding businesses. What appeared to be a major setback turned out to be a blessing in disguise. A new and much larger facility was soon built within a few blocks of the original location and opened in May of 1995.
Roger Kotter passed away unexpectedly January 9, 2012. Roger and Monte worked together for 36 years and were business partners for over 31 years. Monte and Melissa purchased the remaining half of the business at that time and with an experienced team of professionals continues the Stone Lumber traditions started by Frank Stone over 100 years ago.
